At least they're all at the top.

What plane is that not true for besides the A-10?

There is an Air Force technical order out there somewhere which shows nicely the fuel tank layouts of almost all major US aircraft and I can't recall seeing another type as encompassing as the layout on the F-35. The Raptor would be the second closest.

Most 4+ Gen aircraft have fuel tank inerting systems, which pressurize the tank with nitrogen or other inert gas. A round could be fired through the tank, and not ignite the fuel.

Newer Boeing airliners also have fuel tank inerting, as a result of the TWA 800 crash.

Websites change addresses a lot these days, especially military ones for whatever reason, anyhow here is an 8Mb PDF showing the fuel (+ weapon & ejection seat hazards) situation for some European jet types (not US [or F-35 however due to info being old]):

EMERGENCY RESCUE & MISHAP RESPONSE

http://www.0x4d.net/files/AF1/R11%20Segment%2026.pdf (8Mb)

Luckily the website has a directory list of PDFs that will have other aircraft info in them (but again not likely the F-35). Go here:

http://www.0x4d.net/files/AF1/
OR
Go here for a listing of what is what in previous URL list:

I'm sure a lot of study went into the boundary between the B model roll control nozzle feed tubes and the wing A2 tanks.
That is pretty hot air right there and having a stream of hot air under high pressure flowing into the wing spaces in conjunction with a tank rupture would severely complicate the task of the fire suppression system.
If I recall correctly, the shutoff valves at the engine to those tubes was eliminated probably during the Jenny Craig slimdown effort.

Well, the F-15 didn't quite have it's fuel spread so far around, if that's any consolation.

Trying to change an image with another one is more fun that a barrel of monkeys. I'll delete one. Last time I looked there was only one - but there you go. I'll have to keep checking back. I'll have to keep checking back. I'll have to keep checking back. Very Happy

And the Rhino only had its leading-edge/wingroot tanks exposed to ground fire. The main 6-7 cells were mounted in the spinal bulge.

More KLOOS on the iPHONE theme:

First F-35 training commander: 'This jet is our future' Sep/11/2012
by Senior Airman Christina Brownlow, Air Force Public Affairs Agency
(Tech. Sgt. Shawn J. Jones contributed to this article)

http://www.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123317408

"...Kloos said the common frame of reference within the F-35 flying community will have a real impact on air combat.

"We'll speak the same language when it comes to executing tactics," he said.

He also said the impact extends all the way to the top Airman in the fight, the combined forces air component commander.

Much like in large-scale exercises, the extensive variety of aircraft under the air commander's purview requires an encyclopedia's worth of knowledge in order to assign the aircraft to the various day-to-day combat taskings in the most efficient manner.

As more and more of the multi-role F-35s are added to the inventories of the U.S. and its allies, a commander will be able to shift his focus to other warfighting priorities.

While Kloos said the F-35 provides substantial value, it also a joy to fly.

"It's really an easy airplane to fly," said Kloos. "It's very stable and well balanced and it feels very light on its feet compared to how it appears."

Kloos said the aircraft was designed for the new generation of cadets who grew up playing video games.

Compared to the fighters it will replace, the F-35 has a very clean cockpit. The walls of switches common to many aircraft have been moved to two touch screens, which have interfaces that operate like many smart phones...."

As usual more CLUES at the JUMP about common frame of reference for allies working together.

So, with the information the F-35 will be feeding to ground forces, wouldn't it have been nice if they had something like the cancelled NLOSLS to take advantage of it?
