You do not need HMCS. All you need is a target queue, either from an onboard source or an offboard one.
And how get you that in an F-22? |

Onboard via ALR-94 and offboard via IFDL.
But, I think that upgrading MADL to EODAS capabilities would be the best option going forward. |

| That approach to LOAL sounds a bit Rube Goldberg to me; and in any case, I have my doubts as to whether the F-22 will ever be able to share data effectively with other assets. |

| The F-22 shares data with other F-22s today just fine. With a BACN asset, non F-22 assets come into play. However only other F-22s are likely to be used in WVR. |

If this has been asked before then a thousand pardons upon my house but....is the seeker uncaged inside or outside the bay? I always assumed the 9L/M had to see the target to get a good self-track. And is that also the case for the 9X?
The -9M and -9X Block I are LOBL only. The -9X Block II has LOAL capability.
By the time that the F-22 gets the -9X, the Block II will be operational. Once its MLDs are upgraded, then it will have significant improvements in WVR lethality. |

IRST has nothing to do with it, the lack of LOAL capability is the issue.
F-22 has no HMCS, so the 9X won't help with that either.
That's not necessary for LOAL. With the upgrades being done to the MLDs, the -9X Block II can still engage targets spherically. The pilot will simply designate the target shown on his display, rather than turning his head to look at it. The -9X can also use third party targeting from other F-22s, as well as from link 16(which the F-22 can receive) updates. |
