I read a recent story of that young lady not too long ago when it was reported that she was in fact no longer a young lady and had passed away.
Turns out that her stay at aircraft assembly plant was a very short one and that a journalist had found (during a brief visit to the plant) a very camera friendly subject that fit the story the publisher already had nearly complete. Within a week or so of the famous photo, she quit her job at the aircraft factory and found something else more to her liking.
Much was made of women entering the aircraft assembly business, but this tends to mask the larger reality that women were at that time and ever since entering all parts of the US economy in great numbers and aircraft assembly is a small part of the whole.
