It seems that the F-22 uses a commercial NACA airfoil for its wings. According to aerospaceweb.org, the F-22 uses NACA 64A?05.92 at the root and NACA 64A?04.29 tip. Why doesn't the F-22 use a custom supercritical design?

Considering that there are computer programs available that can create a customized wing that maximizes performance, I'm a bit puzzled that the F-22 uses an "off-the-shelf" airfoil.

Maybe "supercritical" is less VLO-friendly than NACA? Shrug

em745,
how did you figure, the F22 doesn't have a supercritical wing?

The F-22's airfoil as cited by aerospaceweb.org has been shown to be a very thin symmetric airfoil with a relatively sharp leading edge. It doesn't appear to be supercritical. I can't quite find an image but I seem to remember one website actually plotting the F-22's airfoils at some point.

While I can't confirm whether the airfoil on the F-22 is "off the shelf" or not, I will say this. If the "off the shelf" version works sufficiently for the needs of the F-22, it's going to be used instead of a customized version purely for production cost purposes. Everything that is customized always costs more than a generic "off the shelf" version.

The Raptor outclasses everything else flying so I guess they chose the airfoil.

How do you figure it's symmetrical, in the first place?
I thought "?" stands for undisclosed, not "0".

This site says it's "0" not "?" though.

Good find...thx. Thumb

Still, an a=0.8 suggests it's a supercritical profile, by any account.
