Panetta Lauds First International F-35 Delivery to UK By Cheryl Pellerin
American Forces Press Service 18 July 2012

http://www.defense.gov//news/newsarticle.aspx?id=117166

"WASHINGTON, July 18, 2012 – After a meeting this morning with the United Kingdom’s top defense official, Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta lauded an important milestone in the U.S.-U.K. defense relationship.

Tomorrow in Fort Worth, Texas, British Defense Secretary Philip Hammond will take the first international delivery of an F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, Panetta told reporters at a Pentagon news conference alongside his British counterpart.

“The United Kingdom was the first partner nation to join the F-35 program and has been a tremendous partner throughout the development, testing, and the initial production,” the secretary added.

Hammond, who joined Panetta for a working breakfast, said, “I look forward to seeing [the supersonic stealth fighter] in operation later on today at [Naval Air Station Patuxent River in Maryland] and then picking up our first test aircraft tomorrow … at Fort Worth.”...

A lot more guff at the jump.

I guess because the new bird is kind of 'his', ole Phil can skip the simulator and jump right in the real thing if he wants to right?
Maybe kick the tires and roll it around the lot scaring everybody half to death?

They can't take it away unless he hands it over since he is the only one with a British ID card?

Philip Hammond shrugs off US criticisms of Joint Strike Fighter 18 July 2012

"Philip Hammond, the defence secretary, poured scorn on concerns over the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) programme on Wednesday comparing an official US government audit into the embattled fighter jet to a “home buyer’s survey” that could be safely ignored.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/ ... ghter.html

"...“If you ever buy a house and you get a surveyor to do a structural survey, you will never, ever buy the house if you read the structural survey,” Mr Hammond said, dismissing a 50-page report by US Government Accountability Office (GAO) which raised profound questions about the fighter last month....

...Britain is scheduled to take delivery of its first aircraft for land-based operations in 2016, before beginning carrier training in 2018, with a view to having a fully operational carrier-based aircraft in 2020, Mr Hammond said....

...“I’m not saying all the work’s been done, all the hitches have been ironed out – of course they haven’t - - there’s lots of development work lots still to do,” he concluded, “Maybe some of the sceptics will change their minds when they see it fly.”

Of course de full story at the jump.

I like this bit:
Quote:
Although tests had demonstrated basic air-worthiness, the report continued, more difficult testing, including “low-altitude” and “high angle” attacks had not started, with testing of a fully operational aircraft not expected until 2015 “at the earliest."

Everyone knows that Lockheed Martin has no idea how to design a plane that flies at low altitudes or high angles, so let's just admit right now it's going to fail those tests spectacularly, ok? Cheers

Does somebody have a good quote from Carlo Kopp Very Happy
Quote:
High Alpha Handling
We then proceeded with some high alpha handling. Entry into this regime involved pulling back the power, while I tracked the control movements hands on, Dave progressively increased the amount of aft stick to maintain a constant airspeed around 90 KIAS. Power is concurrently added to maintain altitude and airspeed, and the aircraft was stable at 43 degrees alpha. Dave then demonstrated a full 360 degree aileron roll while maintaining over 40 alpha and close to full aft stick

Well, they might need to get a F/A-18F from Boeing as the chase plane Smile

@sterospace..... Espically when you consider the lack of testing, it's not like the F-35 has 10,000 hours of wind tunnel testing time. Rolling Eyes

No one else who's developed a 3-version fifth generation jet has run into any engineering problems.

Laughing Funny how so many people don't understand the difficulty because they think LM is just turning out an F-16G.
