FARNBOROUGH: Terma displays F-35 multimission pod
By Greg Waldron Farnborough 09 Jul 2012

"Danish firm Terma is displaying its multimission pod for the Lockheed Martin F-35 fighter aircraft for the first time at Farnborough. The pod can be configured to carry a range of equipment such as an external cannon, additional sensors and jammers.

The carbonfibre pod is optimised for low observability, meaning it will not radically increase the stealthy F-35's radar cross section. The company adds that the pod's light, carbonfibre structure is also good for fuel efficiency.

The company has already delivered 17 of the pods equipped with cannons to the US government for use aboard US Navy F-35Cs and US Marine F-35Bs..."

F-35 Multi Mission Pod on Display
2012-07-10

"...In 2004, Terma won the contract to design, develop, qualify, and produce F-35 Gun Pods for the F-35B and F-35C in partnership with General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products, a business unit of General Dynamics.

The F-35 Pod is a full monocoque composite structure in carbon fiber. It passed engineering test and qualification and has flown on the F-35 in February 2012 and is currently in the LRIP production phase.

The F-35 Pod Enclosure will provide real estate on the F-35, which can be used to expand the F-35 Special Mission functionality, by allowing the F-35 to fly Next Generation EW and ISR systems, such as Jammers and EO sensors...."

I wonder if we could fit some future compact DEW in it for point-defense or offensive roles... Wink Wink

I was thinking of a "self defense" version of NGJ.

btw, The central store location is wired with the same fiber interconnects as the other A2G stations.

What happens if the foe uses a 14" LW QWIP IRST as a countermeasure, along with ramjet powered AAMS with tri mode seekers, and advanced jamming pods? Cool

Wow! Wouldn't that be better located in an E-2/ E-3! Shocked Laughing
With the area of that, it might take a "weapons bay" sized computer to keep up with the tracks! Rolling Eyes

Great idea! Idea , maybe a Block 6? Question

Um, you do know 12" is 12 inches and not 12 feet, right?

That's appears to be about 3x the AAS-42 detector??? That could be a lot of miles and a number of busy tracks. Wink

I was not speaking of the detector, but of the lens/aperture.
