In spring of 2012 it became known that the Russian Air Force is to participate in the Red Flag training exercise in the fall of 2012 together with Americans. From 8 until 19 of October, Red Flag Air Combat Exercise 13-1 will be held at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada (the exercises are numbered in accordance with the fiscal years, and exercise in the fall will be number one in the 2013 fiscal year). Like India, who participated in the Red Flag several years earlier using its Russian-made SU-30 MKI, Russia will get a chance this year to test its aircraft in realistic combat maneuvers with USAF aircraft. This chance is very important, since up until now the only Russian aircraft of the fourth generation which fought in a real combat situation against western aircraft has been the MIG -29, but the possibility of deploying it in the conditions of very specific wars of 1991 and 1999 was limited. Under such circumstances, the chance to test modernized Russian aircraft such as the SU -27 SM, SU-30M2, MIG -29SM and other strike aircraft – despite simulations, they are still against real western aircraft and pilots – is too attractive to be miss out on.

Any bets on the USAF nerfing the Raptor, or keeping it out of this exercise?

I'm more curious as to which weapons RuAF will employ... old stuff from say 8-10 yrs ago, or anything new? Same might apply to the question of any ECM gear used?

But building trust is a good thing, and it's probably overdue that RuAF was finally invited. No doubt, the Kremlin strives to generate a perception of credibility and legitimacy worldwide, so this can be reinforcing. Sure, there's been increased provocative swings up and down and some antagonisms over the past decade, yet this sort of demonstration of the willingness to de-escalate 'us vs them' impressions within the media (including Russian media eg) is a good thing too. Sometimes public opinion and passions can get very stoked, which can only aggravate the political atmosphere unfortunately. Well, let's at least hope the media will report it in such positive light.

Next... would it be too rosy, or worth a shot to propose invitations for a future FY15(?) Red Flag to include Japan, US, Korea and China? To go a few steps further in internationalizing this on an even broader scale? Thumb

It depends on the scenarios. ECM is of limited use in WVR dogfight with IR Heat-seeking missiles in play. ECM has a major effect on non-AESA radar. The MiG-21bis from the Indian Air Force had upgraded ECM capabilities that made them hard to detect. I don't think the USAF aggressor F-15s & F-16s have AESA.

What about the datalink ? Is their datalink compatible with the standard Nato one ?

I imagine they won't play RED AIR, as for that there are the aggressors, but to be integrated in the network they need compatible data-link, right ?

And the aggressors, are i guess the one who are particularly study their tactics, since they are tasked to imitate them (not only, but mainly since Russian hardware is wide spread) .

I also imagine that the Russian will need to get used to do the briefings in English etc ... this can be a positive change for their Air force, it can bring new ideas by being in contact with other nations, i'm sure everybody is excited.

This topic has nothing to do with the F-22 nor anything implied even in the article. As I somehow cannot move topics due to an error, this is closed. If you want to talk about this, create a topic in the appropriate forum.
