Is there a voice in the F-16 telling you to pull up when you're too low? Or saying "Terrain" or "Warning"?

If so, on what versions?

There is a voice warning system, commonly referred to as "Bitchin Betty". In fact, not sure many people are aware of it, here is a web site of the 'voice", Erica Lane.

When the "voice" first came on the block 15 there were two different ones, a soft female voice for "Caution" and a louder and male voice for "Warning". The first time I heard the "Warning" voice during flight control tests I almost hit the roof, as it was so much loader than the conversation going on on the com. I then followed by asking "who said that" to everybodys amusement...

Hey that's cool! What exactly does Bitchin Betty warn you for? Besides is there a website where I could find her sweet warnings? Thank you.

The warning voice was an insistant woman's voice last time I was in the sim (Block 40). A feminine voice is just somethin' a fighter jock hears well. What a surprise! Razz Maybe there's a mod that could be done to install a switch to change it to Barry White's voice for female pilots? Wink Very Happy (I know, I know....he's dead....work with me here. Maybe it could be synthesized.)

I can't remember the rotary for the Caution/Warning test but she didn't call out a particular system except maybe Bingo Fuel as a caution/warning issue. She'd just call out CAUTION or WARNING! to call your attention to the particular panel (the telelight panel or the eyebrow warning lights). She also called out the status of stuff like "LOCK", "JAMMER", and "IFF", maybe a few more.

The B-2 has a man's voice which I found odd. I asked the human factors engineer about it and he said that a woman's voice was originally picked (on the Viper et al) because it was so uncommon to hear a female voice on the radio that it got your attention. These days it is so common the advantage is lost. Plus, a female voice is higher pitched and more likely to be lost over time as the higher pitch hearing is the first casualty of flying jets.

Gives me a reason when I tell my wife "what...?" Shocked

The "human factors engineer" said that, did he? I bet he runs the male voice in his spiffy new Volvo's GPS navigation system too.

It may not be exactly like the real Betty but go here for an interactive synthetic voice transposer. You can type in your own text it'll convert it to a .wav file you can save to your PC. It's not 100% idiot proof tho. You have to kinda play around with how you type certain words but it's not bad. You're limited to 40 attempts in any 24-hour period and each click of the GO button generates a new file, so choose wisely! Wink

That is really cool. I have 3 computers in my office, each with it's own email. I wanted some word alerts that would announce incoming mail, each one being different so I could tell which computer to switch to. perfect

As far as bitching betty, find someone with Falcon 4 installed on their PC...it has all the alerts in .wav format in a voice I can't tell from the original.

Apparently Roscoe, in addition to a female's voice annunciating WARNINGS and CAUTIONS in addition to painting the cockpit grey, provides a soothing environment and ergonomically calms the pilot to prevent anxiety and allows he/she to concentrate on whatever the task at hand may be. Russians think the same way.

Black panels in the cockpit with white or grey numbering, lettering, knobs and switches and lighting with different colors are conducive to the severity of the operation, as I'm sure you already know.

Calming a fighter pilot? Only time he's calm is when he is G'ing his lips off! Smile

Ok so you guys wanna know what "Bitchin Betty" says. Well occasionally i will plug my headset in when i do my power on in the morning and this is what i can remember. when perfoming a power on after doing a caution reset you will then hold the "mal/ind" button (for no more than 20 secs) don't ask me y i just hear it's bad.
so anyways "BB" says "warning, altitude, pull up, chaff, flare, caution, oxygen, fuel. and a few others i can't remember at this time. Next time i plug in i'll pay closer attention.
