| I look at that and all I can think of is "Great! More pods for 'reconfig Fridays'." |

I guess this will be one of the nice things about the F-35. All of the capabilities of the HTS and Sniper will be found in the standard avionics suite. No pods to swap out, which means the troops can focus on other stuff before the weekend starts. Still, I see this as a big deal. Hundreds of F-16s will have SEAD/DEAD capability whereas it used to be only found in a few specialized aircraft, mainly the F-4G and EA-6B.
Out of curiosity, can anyone explain why the USN/USMC never adopted the HTS for it's F-18A-Fs? I'm also interested if there are any foreign operators of the HTS. |

| Even if the HTS pods are loaded on -40s, how effective can the pilots really become? The -50s complained loudly about losing their core SEAD proficiency when they were forced to train for and conduct the -40 primary strike/CAS mission to share the OIF/OEF deployment load. There is only so much training flight time available and can you qualify crews to do BOTH missions without losing necessary proficiency? With the deadliness of modern SAM systems, you cannot afford to have a semi-effective SEAD capability especially with no dedicated Navy capability. |

Nice catch, Henrik - I think this is a nice development, although I am surprised we haven't seen this before beyound the 422TES/85TES?
Ruderambo: If you look at photos of Operation Odysse Dawn from last year, you will see that most if not all Shaw Vipers flew dual role missions. Its more the standard than the exception today, with flexibility the aim compared to previous mission thinking. |
