JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM (HawaiiNewsNow) -
An F-22 Raptor was damaged while landing during memorial services Friday for the 71st anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

The fighter jet, belonging to the 199th and 19th Fighters Squadrons, was damaged on both horizontal stabilizers, according to a release from the Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

The pilot was not hurt. The cause is under investigation.

Officials estimate the cost for repairs is $1.8 million. According to the Air Force, each F-22 costs $143 million to manufacture.

That one's hard to imagine without thinking of the stab going extremely aircraft nose down (i.e. stab leading edge extreme up) in a possibly over-rotated flare. Shocked

Having fixed other tail drags it was just a matter of time before it happened to a Raptor.

If only they had LSOs to wave off the pilots when they come in nose high. Very Happy

Don't leave out the possibility of a wake turbulence encounter with resulting large roll input reversals that could scrape both tails.

Similar to flight 0 on YF-16 #1. No wake turbulence involved, but did have large roll input reversals and scraped both tails.

wow, read about it but never seen it. Looked scary. Isn't that what resulted in the 2:1 input reduction with the gear down?

Actually Phil was the calmest guy around at the post flight briefing. We all knew how close the program came to being a disaster before it ever started. Then a few hours later, when we saw the film, it was even more apparent.

Right, the roll stick gain was reduced as a result. Later, after all the pilots had become accustomed to the non-moving stick, they began to complain that gear down roll was too sluggish, so the gain was increased back to the original value. Partly as a result of this experience, the production stick was given a small amount of movement.

The non-moving stick made it difficult for the pilots to smoothly perform roll maneuvers, Their arms were accustomed to position rather than force feedback.

If you ever noticed the Block 15 and on big tail trailing edge, you can see how it is clipped off at the tip. Runway clearance is the reason.

This pic shows H-stab deflection, time to use non-stealthy skid plates
