this had come up a few years back too. The interesting thing is that the faster they flew, the greater their range (between M3 and M3.2 anyway)

I'm sure that range increase had to do with more and more of the thrust and air compression coming from the inlet/augmentor combo than the gas turbine engine itself and that at mach 3.2 the inlet reached its shock on lip supersonic design point such that flow spillage would be eliminated and the shock formations weren't as irreversible right?

more or less. The backside of the shock cone is making more thrust than anything else.
