| Definitely tomcats. I don't really know for sure, but I think the projection under the nose is a sensor that is only on the -D model. |

| Those are both A-models and the gadget under the nose is a long-range TV camera for VID without a radar lock. |

Link this is something I have always found confusing. On earlier models like the A, the piece of kit under the now was an infrared sensor. AN/ALR-23.
Later models had a Camera fitted for as you say, VID. the very last upgrades were a combined Infrared sensor and camera mount slaved to the radar.
ALL tomcat models seem to have at least "something" under their noses.
regards
Snypa. |

Mainly the fact that the pic is a screen capture from Top Gun. No B or D models in service at that time. |

I am ashamed to admit that I watched Top Gun the other day. Aside from the great aerial footage of F-14s, the rest of the movie is trash. Lately I've been watching JAG on Belgian TV, maybe something is wrong with me...
"Goose, watch out for the canopy..."
Like, what was he supposed to do, push it out of the way?
Best Regards, |

Last time I watched it I could've sworn I heard Goose shout "THANK YOU CAPTAIN OBVIOUS!!" as he went up the pole. But don't quote me.
Here ya go Snypa. Could be IR, could be TCS. Cruddy rez. Tough call.

Well, apparently the flat-spin eject problem had come up before, and the ejecting crews had seen the canopy sticking around above them longer than it should have, so they waited extra time before actually ejecting. The idea would be watch the canopy until it moved off to a safe distance.
I still have no idea anyone would know that was a still from Top Gun, though. I've seen the movie several times and I can't even place it. |

Sunset behind the jets. Might be the return trip after the first engagement with Cougar and Merlin (they got back to the boat at twilight). If not, "The Final Countdown" maybe? Either way...definitely no later than a B-model.
This site has what looks like a mirror image of the first pic.

Cheers link, looks like all Tomcats had something under their noses ie all models. The F-14 was the very first aircraft I ever painted sio has a special place for me:) It "looks" exactly how you would imagine a long range naval interceptor SHOULD look
Great pic btw, I think the lead ship is too close for missiles and may have to switch to guns, |

I thought the eject secvence was automated.
First the bolts on the Canopy detonate and then a few sec delays before the rockets in the seat starts and off you go?
If not, then a good number of pilots would be dead. Kovochur in his Mig-29 comes to mind.. The whole point is that the ejection must happend fast. |
