Anyone care to bet on how long the next USAF trainer development program will take from American prototype to IOC? I'm guessing a minimum of 8 years and two congressional investigations.

I would throw in one cancellation/restart.

Having a commonality of some F-16 parts would also make the T-50 a better cost option.

What commonality? Why don't we just use stripped down F-16s as trainers?

I am not avert to an F414-powered interceptor for the ANG. They could use something not an F-16 for basic CONUS protection. Not that I wouldn't rather see something more like an F-106A airframe using an F110 or F100 powerplant.

F-4E+ powered by twin F414s would be better if we're going to go this route.

Why do we need a new jet. Weren't the T-38s recently upgraded to C models? If we absolutely have to get a new plane as a trainer, why don't we just use a stripped down F-16B/D? If we're willing to pull these birds out of AMARG and sell them to friendly nations, why not use them as trainers? My overall preference is to keep the T-38s as long as possible. Save the money.

5th gen is the dead gen … with modern day technology we should be able to knock pigeons out of midflight? Other than a bird strike?

Why are we doing this?
