So how long do we have to keep adding the ' II ' to the end of the F-35 Lightning name?
Seems abit silly to me.
You would have to have a bag of bricks for brains to confuse the current lightning with the WWII era twin piston driven aircraft.
The navy doesn't tack on a number to the Enterprise each time they put that name on a new warship (do they)???
The F-4 Phantom was really the Phantom II but unless your writing a technical document nobody bothers with the II because we don't need to. |

It doesn't matter what name "we the engineers" stick on the engineering drawings, the dumb a$$ pilots and ground crews will rename it any way. They seem to have trouble with big words and numbers and such, so they find the need dumb it down.  |

Well, the initial cadre didn't mind "Falcon", but the PTB were concerned that a French civilian jet had that moniker.
The Battlestar Galactica series had just ended and we thot "Viper" was cool. But the same PTB didn't want the jet named after a serpent. Off topic, but my flight at one Red Flag was "Cylon", heh heh.
I also think the Navy went thru the same drill with the Bug. Seems Northrop's initial name was "Cobra". At least they decided on a bug with a sting! Imagine the F-18 Butterfly.
We never used the "Fighting" part of the name, and continued with Viper to this day.
We never called our A-7D's Corsair II. Both nasal radiators and we airdales called it Corsair or SLUF.

I think a couple things that might have to do with the change to Hornet is that "Cobra" was a Northrop name, having been assigned at least as far back as the P-530 iteration (which ended up being the YF-17). Also, there was already a Cobra flying - in the Army and USMC. |

Sticking numbers on another plane's name doesn't really relate to that, though, especially with an obvious warplane name like "lightning" that people would have been bound to come up with more than once even without knowing anything about earlier planes.
