"FORT WORTH -- Machinists union members at Lockheed Martin overwhelmingly rejected the company's final contract offer Sunday, initiating a strike that could disrupt the already troubled F-35 program."

"The F-35 "is the largest government contract in history. They're making plenty of money and they need to share with us," aircraft assembler Tim Martinez said."

Unions these days are generally controlled by old farts about to retire. If LM wasn't keeping up with inflation (wage-wise), I'd get it, but I wouldn't walk off the job just so some codger can be picky about his doctors or die is a slightly nicer nursing home.

I forgot where I said it before, but maybe we should ban government contractors from going on strike for "security/public safety reasons". It worked with the ATC.

During past strikes, the salaried folks were given jobs in the plant and the result was that the backlog of orders was erased and production outran the schedule. The problem with seniority is the layoffs leave all the workers from 2 programs ago in charge of production. All the new hires with the most current grasp of technology are out the door.

If L-M would take the strike now and keep them out for 6 months or more they would be in a great bargaining position. Spouses don't like living without income. The caveat is that they have enough salary folks to maintain the development program at the test sites. A long strike would take a lot of time out of the concurrency problem. When settled the production rate could be set at an economical level to make up for the lost production during the period of the strike. This would additionally solve the unit cost escalation associated with the decrease in the LRIP lot sizes.

Fort Worth? Is that "right to work" territory?

Quote:
Lockheed spokesman Joe Stout said Sunday that the company's leaders are "disappointed that the union members rejected the company's last, best and final offer and voted to strike. Our operations will remain open and we will implement our contingency plan while focusing on meeting our commitments to our customers."

Interesting. I wonder if LM was looking to unload it's union workforce.

If LM provided all the training, I'd work for the package those guys rejected. Got no problem being a scab in this economy.

Me, too. Though my wife might object to moving to Texas.

I remember how my mom gave Dad hell when we had to move for his job; she got over it. Had an aunt and uncle who stayed put (and poor) in a similar situation; they got a divorce. Money can't buy happiness, but its availability has a way of sorting the other problems out.

Well, that, and I already have a job...

Or complicate things, such as what's going on in Fort Worth.

If they don't like the pay I heard there's some excellent aerospace job openings in Russia.
