Sad day indeed for for our Naval Aviation brethren. Sad Salute

USS Enterprise returns to Norfolk for the last time.

She will eventually be replaced by USS Gerald R. Ford.

Does not seem right not having an active U.S. ship named Enterprise... Salute

Agreed. And I'm of the opinion we should stop naming carriers after presidents. Honoring presidents by naming a national asset after them was nice, but it's time for a change. The nation that created these masterpieces is bigger than any one man, including the POTUS.

We should have returned to naming them after historic naval ships, recycling names if need be: America, United States, Saratoga, Coral Sea, Ranger, Wasp, Hornet, and yes...Enterprise (I know some vessels still carry some of those names, but you see my point). Would have been great to call the next gen carriers the "America Class". Has a great ring to it. Smile

The America class sounds good, but what to name the individual ships? Battles from the Revolutionary war might be a nice touch, there probably won't be many ships of the class to be certain!

I always thought Constellation had a nice ring to it somehow. I don't particularly like ships to be named after people, especially those that haven't been dead for at least 50 years.

The Brits had some nice names to, Ark Royal obviously but the Indefatigable always struck me as the ultimate name for a warship.
