Tankrat, you are so right. The most important thing is the seat and system worked and the Pilot walked away.
We're all thankful and can certainly wait for more details. |

Curiously, someone described a flame coming from the center of the fuselage, if I gathered that correctly. I have seen a JFS explode on two different occasions on Eagles, but both times that happened, it was in the start up/launch sequence, not in flight. Of course, the JFS does kick off shortly after the engine cranks, but then again, it IS a bottle under pressure. Like I said, I've never heard of one spontaneously exploding in flight, but I'm not sure that it couldn't happen. Could it possibly have been an AMAD fire that someone saw? I have seen that occur in flight (well, I wasn't in flight, the plane was) but fortunately the pilot was able to bring that one home to a barrier engagement.

Did they say what part of the fuselage the fire came from? Top, sides, bottom? |

That's a negative on the flame position, although I did see the footage of the wreckage today, and it broke up just foward of the wings' leading edges. I don't know if this area of breakage was due to impact (most likely) or a fatigue point that was initiated by flame (possible but not likely). We're about 28 days from knowing an answer on the cause though. Just glad the driver is ok.

Nobody really knows an exact cause yet, but most at my company(P&W) are concerned it was an engine failure. I've seen a similiar scenario with an F-15 in which one of its engines threw a turbine blade. |

| that would be the first real engine issue we've had yet. the motors have been really reliable throughout the entire test phase. |

| TC, are you at Holloman AFB? If not, there is a sergeant there with detachment one who goes by TC. |

Hmm...Someone else goes by TC...D@mn! Nothing's sacred anymore. No, I'm at Tyndall, although I do run into people from Holloman quite a bit, because we share FSAT duties with Holloman. The 82nd Aerial Targets Squadron is based at Tyndall with the 53rd Wing, and has a Det. at Holloman. We blow up Phantoms over the Gulf, and they blow em up over WSMR.

Great pics! That pilot looks like Sal. Sal was an ex-105 driver in Nam, and helped bomb the Paul Doumer Bridge If you put wings on a Buick Deuce and a Quarter, he could fly it! As an aside, I didn't run into anybody when I was in with my nickname, but I did meet an Eagle driver that basically had the same name as me, with the exception of one letter. How's that for creepy?

| Anyone have an idea of when the accident report will come out? I'm curious as to what happened. Also, do you think the report will be made public? The only reason I wonder about the report's disclosure is the security I saw around it at Aviation Nation. Thanks all! |

| I am wondering if it makes any difference to a pilot whether you are flying a $ 45million or a $300 million dollar plane. In theory it shouldn't. |
