I suppose I am the problem. I just get weary of Norway waving the "I'm Special Needs!" flag.
Really Norway? Still playing that card? Is it really easier to redesign everything that flys than figure out those pesky paving machines function?

Perhaps they should buy F-35Cs and use field arresting gear to stop on their special "icy" runways. I'm not sure a F-35A could handle routine arrested landings.

They do this in Finland with F-18s somewhat routinely. The Canadians have also been known to use arresting gear to stop on an icy runway as well.

The F-35Cs also have a lower landing speed as well, right?

One would have to look at other reasons why Norway would not buy the F-35C instead of the F-35A (advantage/disadvantage). One would guess they have done so and settled on the F-35A. If all Norway worried about were icy runways then we are all doomed. Very Happy This thread after all is about Turkey and their F-35A buys. Like Oztralia they are not likely to experience 'icy runways' too often.

I had a number of excellent Norwegian students way back, and the only time they mentioned 'ice' was for their drinks.

Conversely, I've flown with a number of excellent Turkish pilots, and they indicated to me that you rarely put ice in 'raki' (rockeye).

Very Happy

Humor me, but what would make Norway "Special"? I understand they have weapons they want integrated, and prefer drag chutes on their jets. Am I missing something? Is it shorter runways than other operators?

There's something embarrassing about crashing a carrier aircraft like the F/A-18 on a conventional runway landing, when field arresting gear is available and should be used and is not. A F-35 is a more expensive aircraft to wreck.

As above, I don't know how good the F-35A for repeated arrested landings, but hopefully it wont require special inspection after a routine arrested landing.

How about starting a thread about Norway 'specialness'? Thanks.

JUMP here to continue any 'especially icy Norwegian F-35A discussion'. TAH. Shocked

Norway may no longer require drag chute [which apparently no longer true]
