Apparently the RAAF like to plan VERY far ahead in the future. They even like to think they'll have space transports for deployment of equipment and personnel anywhere in the world in less than an hour and a massive fleet of F/B-22-esque Trans-Atmospheric super fighters that can operate efficiently at sub-orbital, orbital and "conventional" altitudes.
Seriously just look at the last Air Force Evolution wallpaper and TELL ME that's not what you see. |

Not only the broken tail fin, but also the doors to the internal AMRAAMs both being open but nowhere near touching each other, mean that's a plane that doesn't even exist. But what it comes closest to isn't F-35B; it's X-35B. It's still got a little dorsal shark-fin-shaped antenna and upper lift fan doors that open to the sides.
And why do both F-35-like things have all four doors open at the same time?
And why are the NGB/LRSB analogs shooting missiles (instead of throwing bombs) at the target from a few hundred yards away while flying on near collision courses with each other, and why so few weapons apiece?
And why do the big blocky spacecraft have those little wings? Those wouldn't do any good even in an atmosphere!
I also love the uniforms on the guys on the ground, with kangaroo logos on the shoulders and "shoot me" lights on the helmets. (The fact that this is an Air Force's site and their vehicle says "Air Force" on it is also odd to me, but I realize that sometimes the placement of the lines between military branches is odd like that in real life...) |

Hey, if it's an X-35B, that means that the cockpit doesn't make me recoil in horror every time I look at the damn thing. The F-35 cockpit just seems...wrong...for some reason.

You heard here first, folks.
That's the same spacecraft that uses the super-complex RBCC engine that makes TEG shudder so much. You know, the one that instantly cools airflow down to -140 degrees Celsius and then has an overall pressure ratio of 150 and has 4 turbopumps/turbocompressors and a helium loop coolant for good measure?
However I do agree that some sort of combined cycle system is one of the few viable methods of actually making a trans-atmospheric spacecraft depicted so many times in sci-fi viable. If Reaction engines can get their idea to work, more power to them.
Anyway, I feel quite confident that whoever came up with these designs for these future systems didn't have much contact with actual engineers who design these things. I will admit these wallpapers look pretty freaking awesome though. I even have one as my desktop wallpaper at the moment. |
