There have been many purported 5th gen fighter concepts from China, but what types of jets does it actually need? The J-20 seems like a rough analogue to the F-22 tailored to a Chinese operational environment and building practices, but there are capabilities such as carrier-basing and internal carriage of large A2G weapons that the J-20 can't perform. Based solely on the needs of the PLA, what kind of 5th gen craft or crafts would China prefer to complement the J-20?
A lightweight fighter? A heavy carrier fighter? A strike fighter?
All opinions welcome. |

Well, there's a lot of thought that the J-20 is actually a carrier-killer. We have no clue exactly what the capacity of its internal bay is, but it could potentially be very large.
As for a compliment, I'd look for a smallish VLO fighter that can be built in large numbers to replace some of the PLAAF's outdated aircraft. It would only need to carry a few AAMs internally. The J-20 is definitely the 'high' end of the capability spectrum, now they need the 'lo' end. |

Actually, its seems the J-20's proportions are more for greater un-refueled range (because China still has no real tanker capability) than for weapons carriage. The bays are of the same layout and size as the Raptor's.
Also, I think I put this thread in the wrong place... should be in Modern Aircraft instead of Cold War... |
