I don't know how long this link will last, so catch it while you can. It's a new National Geographic documentary about how F-4s meet their end. One story follows a German crew dismantling an 6000 hr+ Phantom for parts; the other story follows the use of another old bird as a target drone in the US. Enjoy.

Though it pains me deeply to see a Rhino go out, this is a very interesting clip. Thanks for posting!

For the "Just in case" mentality.

How long you figure it would take to recommission a wing's worth of 'stored Phantoms' ?

First, thanks to 503rd for the link, loved it.

TEG, I don't know but I will take bets that it will take 4 times longer to discuss the pros and cons here on the forum. LOL! Side question: how long did phase take on the jet?

Based on Tracor/BAe's current time for QF-4s, we'd probably be looking at a year or so, or less if more personnel were committed as would happen in wartime. Frankly, the Phantom is a great airframe for the 'just in case'-minded such as myself. It can carry more ordnance than any TACAIR asset other than the Beagle, and can outrun most things on the deck. The trick would be installing APG-66(?) radars from stored Hornets and rewiring some things for AMRAAM carriage. If you did that, and piggybacked a LANTIRN/SNIPER pod and its associated electronics onto the system, you'd actually have a very nice F-15E supplement, as occurs in the novel I am writing. The F-4D also has the chance of accommodating an APG-63 (far larger radome than the -E), and y'all know I'll tell anyone who will listen that we need to bring the RF-4Cs back ASAP Wink Wink

Yeah, I'm an unreconstructed Phanatic all right... Cool Cool

The Recon Rhino...which gave us about a 1 minute or less TOT at Mach Snot, shooting wet film, vs. a Pred or Reaper which can spend nearly a day over the same target, shooting real time footage...all of this with the capability to shoot back with Hellfires (either airframe) or GBU-12s (MQ-9s only).

Yeah, good luck getting the Chief of Staff to sign off on that one. lol
