Just bought it on amazon, looking forward to some action.^^
I've finished writing a book of my own over the past year and hope to get it pubished in the next half year. Although my own spotlights the Raptor rather than the Viper. |

Firstimpulse, glad you got it! I really do hope you enjoy it! It's not strictly about the Viper, but I'll let you see that for yourself. Hopefully, you'll enjoy.
As for your book! That's fantastic! Good luck to you. Breaking into the world of publishing is PAINFUL, but it can be done. There's a long history of military writers and I hope there's a long future in it, too. It doesn't matter the topic, aircraft, or genre-I would be more than happy to help you all that I can. Just steel yourself now against the negativity and difficulties, lean on the background you've got, and know that you can make it. I've been working this novel for nearly a half decade (longer, if you consider the many years of finding my voice) and I've had more rejections and more obstacles than any SERE course. Having said that, I've met a lot of interesting people, learned a lot about myself, and enjoyed the process. I wish you all the best and am here to help in any way that I can.
Best,
Mike |

Yeah, I'm working on some really crazy novel revolving around F-4s and F-16s in a rather nightmarish domestic political situation. The Phantoms are only reactivated out of total desperation, but end up being surprisingly effective. I've got over 180 pages so far, and am hoping to finish by the summer...
@OleRusty, I'll definitely try to review it once I finish |

Phantom,
The F4 has always been one of my favorite. I was at the Naval Museum at Pax River last week and stood just as long admiring the lines of the phantom as I did trying to decipher the X35's. In fact, I sent my wife a pic up the tail and entitled it 'now that's a nice a$$'. Apparently, if the photo doesn't get through, but the text does then the wives get upset... |

@SouthernPhantom, Awesome! I'd like to check that out when you're done! Do said Vipers/Phantoms engage each other, or a separate enemy? Can't wait for it!
The book I've finished and am now in the process of publishing is a "next generation" spy novel, so jets are only minimally involved (I'm working to have more of them in the sequel!), but I've started work on a good ol' fashioned war story alongside it, which constantly pits 5th gen stealth fighters against each other in flashy Mach-2, 13-g, Vietnam-type fights to the death.
@OleRusty, Thanks for the advice! Great stories are always character-driven, vehicles like jets just add to the awesomeness.
I was going to go through Kindle Direct for a nice and easy publishing route, but turns out plagiarism is rampant on that service- and having spent the better part of five years working on the concept of my spy book (and the past year actually writing it), I couldn't have any risk. So now I'm thinking of self-publishing. Would it be ok for me to pm you some questions?
I've read through 68% of your book since my last post...
(WARNING, POSSIBLE SPOILERS to people reading this thread)
And all I can say is that you are without a doubt a pro. The lead up to the war is impressive and imposing, yet, despite its length, is very direct. I've done some research on the DPRK's military capabilities for my own writings in the past, and because of this was a bit perplexed about a few things described in the initial invasion (such as the sheer number of MiGs)... But when I thought about it some more and re-checked the facts, it turns out you were dead on. Btw, the Viper vs. 100 MiGs dogfight is something to behold- fighter pilot "Billy the Kidd" is sweet. Every detail is pain-staking and well-researched, which leaves all the characters in a shockingly realistic world. Just the way I like it. Yet this is no textbook, and all the detail is tucked away and streamlined into the story so well that a reader will never realize all the info they're really taking in. It's like watching a History Channel show with the characters of a superb Mystery and with the action and pacing of a Hollywood thriller. Good stuff.
I wish I could put my review on Amazon.com, but my account's been acting up.
Anyway, can't wait to finish it- will there be a sequel? |

Firstimpulse,
Thanks for the kind words. Absolutely agree that the story is what's important. I am happy that you're enjoying it. There will definitely be a sequel and I am working on it right now. I'm currently working on getting a contract for the follow-ups, but it is a difficult community to break into (especially for military soldiers who are unwilling to bend our morales and integrity to the way the publishing world works). Please push my name and story out to as many people as you can reach.
Feel free to pm me about your story and I will help all that I can. I have some friends in the espionage magazines who are always looking for good writers and I'd be honored to pass the info between you.
Sincerely,
Mike |
