I was looking at some phantom photos and on some aircraft I've seen a cylindrical piece on the left wing root while on others I haven't. What is it exactly? I provided a photo below (if I'm not allowed to provide links then I apologize). Thanks in advance.

TISEO.
"Target ID System Electro-Optical"
'Long' range TV with magnification
Do a search on 'F4 TISEO'.
What a beautiful machine (it also has some other goodies) |

BTW, notice no WSO.
In its 'dying' days it finally became a single-seater.

| So were the Phantom-equipped Thunderbirds (and I presume the Blue Angels as well). Only difference was moving the control head for the INU to the front cockpit. |

Good point.
I don’t know about the T-Bird’s INS control panel being moved up front (maybe for long haul overwater divert stuff). I flew the stock ‘D’ model with the back seat strapped down a number of times.
(Return flights after dropping someone off, returns from taking another pilot out to pick up a broken aircraft or, for awhile, pickups of ALR/ALE ‘modded’ ones in Duluth)
Inertial in the back was left in the ‘O F F’ position. The ADI source switch was left in ‘standby’, i.e. typical gyro operated ADI, and you had a peanut gage attitude indicator backup anyway, so no different then a 100 or 105.
Normally when a WSO (if so equipped) completed the INS alignment he would say “Cleared Prime/Sync” which indicated that the source switch on the ADI could be selected from ‘STBY’ to the so called ‘Primary’ inertial position.
I personally always flew in STBY with PRIM as the backup anyway, figuring that any early variant system that needed a proven reliable backup was more likely to fail than the reliable backup itself.
Having flown the A-7 before the F-4, the F-4 inertial was somewhat of a joke. It was a bit ironic that a number of our WSO’s were ex C-5 Navs who had been replaced by inertials.
