I have had this video clip put away for probably 25yrs, but figured it was time to give everybody a good laugh.
Here is the setup, night LANTIRN NVP training ride, 1000FT to 200FT off the deck at 450kts, going thru the Kern River Valley, with a Black Widow Spider crawling around on the HUD, the pilot not liking spiders, and the back seater (IP) taking advantage of the situation by egging him on.

Nevermind the high speed and high terrain on either side. Let's have some witty banter about the damn spider! Do spiders feel G onset I wonder? And I can't believe neither of 'em channeled Indiana Jones: "There's a big spider in the plane Jaques! I hate spiders Jaques! I hate 'em!"
That's some sweet old timey LANTIRN video BTW. |

| Nah, spiders seem to be impervious to Gs. I had one once on a BFM ride and he was walking around during Tc Entry. |

Great video...astonishing how relaxed these two guys are despite the ground rushing by less than 200 feet below and 450 knots!
Quiz question: Who can tell me why you can't see the spider on the video even though it was clearly on the HUD combining glass in the field of view?
Best Regards, |

Answer: Assuming that was some kinda WAC or WAR HUD in the clip, it's 'cause the video camera on those HUDs is below and forward of the combining glass. The camera feed and HUD symbology are magically mixed by the AVTR system (or whatever it's called nowadays). So the spider wouldn't show up in the recorded image unless of course it crawled down in front of the camera at some point. Which would've been muy inconvenient if it did it on short final!
Do I get a back seat ride if I'm right? Hmm? Yes? Preferably down low-n-fast like those guys? |

It was a LANTIRN test so it Had to be a WAR HUD, but yes, the camera didn't actually show though the HUD. My question is, did the pilot not know or forget this (he kept asking the back seater if he could see it) or did he assume the GIB could look around him and actually see the HUD (cuz I don't recall being able to do that).
That said, this is hysterical. Loved how the GIB casually mentioned that they could jump.
One of those voices sounds like Randy Abraham...?
edit: Just finished it and I was right! Randy Abraham was in the pit and Jeffrey "Nooch" Nuccio was the spider-phobic driver. |

Good answer gents! Pre-Block 25s had the camera aft of the HUD combining glass, and Block 25 and on had the camera moved forward of the HUD. The real world video and the composite video are mixed in the camera electronics unit to produce the final video. That's why you need camera and CTVS coefficients, to place the composite video accurately on the real world video.
It's a shame you guys came back with the answer so fast...I was curious to see what the posers were going to say. Hey, maybe I'll still get lucky...
Best Regards |

Your're prolly right. But if it was an Eddie jet, I never assume the obvious. That's why I put the WAC option in there 'cause it has a raster capability also.

Makes sense. 9G x next-to-nothin' is pretty much still next-to-nothin'. |

Thanks guys! I WAS wondering why the backseater "can't see him on the repeater" and mentioned such on the YouTube comments - I should have known to come here first |
