Caught the pic below on the Air Force Link photo page. It's an enlisted troop from Kadena doing relief ops in Sri Lanka and he's got this odd looking mask on. Very Darth Vader-ish! Cool Anyone ever seen that type of mask before?

Looks like something you would wear when jumping into heavy ground brush from a helicopter or airplane

I asked the same question on another board and this is the answer I got
Quote:
I don't know if this will be helpful to you as my knowledge of the face shield is quite basic. What I do know is that it's used by Blackhawk crews, especially door gunners to protect their faces from debris and wind during combat operations. I understand that is used especially by MH-60L (MH-60 with doors and side windows usually removed to conserve weight.) SOAR units. I don't think that it has any defensive ballistic capabilities outside of debris and contains no extra communications equipment. It is simply a protective face shield. It would also seem to make communication in such an environment easier as it blocks out rotor noise picked up by the crewmans mic. Terrifying looking though isn't it.
