Also, could someone confirm something for me? The wing tanks on that BUFF look smaller than the tanks the D models carried on missions into Nam. Am I right?

D model tanks are much larger and can be punched off in flight if needed. G and Hs had more fuel efficient low bybass turbo fans ( as opposed to a D's super smoky low power turbojets ) so G's and H's had smaller external tanks.

( I have been around B-52s way too much and know a bunch of operators and maintainers )

Can't beat the sight of 3 old B-52D's with the turbo jets during a cold morning doing a minimum interval take off ( with water injection ) and blotting out the sunrise with large streams of black smoke. Very Happy And the sound is magnificent! (old turbojets are NOT quiet ) And then watch old A model KC-135s with their super dinky turbojets, limp into the air after them. Ah, the good old days of SAC ( "The reward for a job well done is no punishment" ) Laughing

The smokey turbojets! For some reason, that will be a memory which will always stick with me. I was a yute at the time (1984) and saw a D model from Griffiss at an airshow. For some reason I want to say this BUFF still had the SEA Night Camo paint scheme (the baddest looking BUFF paint job ever) but 20 years will play tricks on your memory. Even to this day, however, I distinctly remember the smoke on takeoff, just as I remember those old, smokey 135s. Oh yeah, while I'm on the subject of BUFF paint schemes, does anyone know the name of the green, and gray on white paint scheme that was used on BUFFs in the 70s and 80s? Good looking scheme, but not quite as sinister looking as the SEA Night scheme. Twisted Evil

To err is human. To forgive was not SAC policy.

This thread has been dead for awhile, so I thought I'd give it another try. I'm hoping maybe ELP or some of you other folks with experience around the BUFF will know the answer to this one:
