| My dad always yelled, "Don't name it after me!!!" when I'd go out as a high schooler. I agree...Enjoy high school, stay out of trouble and get good grades if you really want to be a fighter pilot.... |

Dont get too absorbed in it Yellow13 (I mean messin up HS, not the whole callsign thingy) You'll get plenty of chances to redeem yourself. I think our APAS put it best... You dont need to be a 4.0 student and what not to excel in ROTC. AFROTC turns DOWN scholarships to those kinds a folks all the time. Why? they are a dime a dozen... You can find book nerds like that everywhere if you just look hard enough. AFROTC wants achievement. You can have an IQ of 188 and never study for a test but pass with an A+ everytime but if you've never done anything with that brain of yours whats the AF need you for? They just want to know if they give you a job, you'll get it done; and whatever you do, you'll work hard at it to become better at it. The best advice I ever took was "Hardwork Beats Talent". It's true. I see it every day; talented individuals who slid by in life without an ounce of work because their "gifts" allowed them to pass through, but when something actually challenges them, they give up and quit. They are not used to working for something. While a talented individual might level out at a certain point, hard workers will keep growing better. Now, of course, the ultimate thing you can be is a talented hard worker but those are rare and few and far between. Those are your "golden arms", "nuclear physiscist" and other people who are just exceptionally great at stuff.
As for the call sign stuff :p we all go through that phase where we want something that we think is cool to help us pick up women or something. I say ignore it. You dont need another reason for people to call you a nerd, your already joining the AF, that there is a big one. (For those that dont know, weather you refuse to believe it or not, the USAF is the worlds largest collection of nerdy types! It's true; if you get turned on by how a jet engine works, you are deffinatly a nerd!) Anyways... wait till you get your pilot slot. Then you can stare at yourself in a flight suit in the mirror 6 hours a day, and walk around in your flight suit wearing a helmet and oxygen mask everywhere you go, and sure, people will think your a nerd for that too, but at least you get to go fly a jet plane tommorow and they dont! :p

| Aaron, I couldn't agree with you more about the hard work. Its all about drive, and determination. How bad do you want it. Because if you work at it, you aren't going to be dumb. You may not be the best... But if you constantly show you are improving, I'd rather have you on my side. What is that think in sports. A coach would rather have a guy that is mediocre and give 100% then the really talented guy giving 60%. Its that concept. |
