I was wondering if anyone know where I should look to find out how to work on F-16's overseas. I heard all about guys working on them overseas, when I was in the Air Force. but now I can't find any info on it.

A few draw-backs, you still wear the uniform, have to follow the some of the same screwed-up rules/regs, and still deploy. (But not as long, most the time)

. That is before you figure in the tax benefits of course, BAH and BAS aren't taxed. You can retire out of the Active Duty side after 20 years, you'll have to work on jets until you're about 55. There are good reasons for going Guard or Reserve, but look at all of your options first----and the BIG PICTURE of each component and how you'll fit in.

I'm happy with my decision to go Guard, but it took me a while to even get my AGR position---which was with our Alert Detachment at Langley AFB. I'm back in North Dakota now as a full-time technician and I'm pretty happy with how things are going. However, I have friends that are still Active Duty that are fairly happy with how things are going and are looking to retire from military service in a few years and move on to something else.

It all depends on what you want to do, work in the military for 30+ years or retire after 20+ and go on to something else.

I work at Hill AFB as a civilian. I am currently an instructor teaching the A-10 and the F-16. I know there are quite a few opportunities to work overseas as a civilian. Wheres Henkster? He has some good info on a company that does some contract F-16 work in Holland.

The other side of the Guard is going in as a Weekender or Traditional Guardsmen. In that mode you can keep current, add to a fine unit, get benefits and pretty good weekend pay, and still travel some.

I will admit, the Technician way of life is one of the better options. You sure do not get Tech-Rep Pay, but those jobs are few and far between.

The reason I went Guard was due to the USAF back in 1982 not wanting any prior-service folks. I took the Guard route with a Try-One Program and got out after 24 years total service as a E-7 First Sergeant.

Look into it. You have to be a Guard Member first to apply for a Technician Posting, and this gives your fellow Techs a chance to see you work before you come on board as one of them.

The US Navy has Block 15's contracted maintenance by Boeing at Fallon NAS, NV. I work for Lockheed in F/W and heard from a buddy in Italy working the F-16's over there that a couple of Crew Chiefs are getting ready to leave and will need to be replaced. I work as an ART for the Reserve. Avionics on F-16s here at Homestead. The Reserve has 4 units with F-16s. Hill, Carswell, Luke and Homestead. They are always hiring. Every AFSC. Go to the Air Force Personel Center web page. Search for jobs. And they will be listed. Mechanics are WG-10/11 and Avionics are 12/13. Which is about 19 to 25 dollars an hour. They do the maintenance on the F-16's with the RNLAF and I know they used to have a contract with the norwegians too but I don't know the status of that right now.

The Taiwan 21st fighter squadron here at luke just switched from military to Civilian Contractor, alot of ex-usaf crew chiefs and specs work there, alot of the older maintainers seem to like it especially since they fly A and B models.

As far as I know, the author of Vipers in the Storm went to Taiwan as an instructor for couple of months after he left USAF. Perhaps you could find some information from him?

He mentioned this experience on his web site but refused to tell me more regading his work over there. Sad
