Everyone has brought up good points. As far as the pilot's disposition, I would think this man will fly again. I've heard of far worse happening, and a pilot's career continuing. All I know is that if you can waste a perfectly good $30 mil aircraft because you "claimed" your CRU-94 got stuck in the ejection handle (SURE!), then a few errant rounds that hurt no one shouldn't be the end of your flying days. BTW, that ejection story is true. Ask me about it sometime, though we may have to dig up one of Kevin's ejection threads to talk about that one. Work is over. Time for food, and beer. I'm out.

| So in Falcon 4.0 it's possible to pull the trigger and fire the weapon on accident...that's with an idiot like me playing. I'm sure the pilot in Jersey was just a victim of circumstances...one of those "sucks to be you" type things. Just guessing... |

School strafed by F-16 gets $500,000 in settlement, November 1, 2006, 3:38 PM EST
LITTLE EGG HARBOR, N.J. (AP) _ The Air Force will pay more than $500,000 to an Ocean County elementary school that was mistakenly shot by an F-16 on a training maneuver two years ago.
Under a settlement announced Wednesday, the Air Force will pay $519,070 in compensation to the Little Egg Harbor Intermediate School. The building was damaged by 27 rounds of inert 20mm ammunition from an air cannon mounted on the plane during a Nov. 3, 2004 nighttime mission over the New Jersey Pinelands.
The military blamed the pilot for the accident, but also said poorly designed controls in the F-16 played a role.
"The Air Force has done the right thing," said Rep. Jim Saxton, R-Burlington. "Their agreement goes a long way towards repairing the actual damages to the school building as well as keeping their relationship with the community healthy."
School officials did not immediately return a call seeking comment Wednesday.
No one was injured in the mishap, which rattled the southern Ocean County region surrounding the Warren Grove Gunnery Range. Eight of the 2-inch lead rounds punched through the school's roof, knocking down ceiling tiles.
At least one round struck a child's desk, and others scuffed the asphalt in the parking lot. The rounds explode on impact when they are live.

Are the controls design so badly that a pilot will accidentally shoot a school? How many other similar incidents can you name in the ~30 years of F-16 existence?
Don't get me wrong, I believe the school should be compensated, but putting some of the blame on the aircraft sounds a little far-fetched. Sounds like a pilot needed more simulator time to me. |

Hmmm... how should I put this... if eight rounds through the roof, when no one is in the school, is worth $500k, my address is...

| What was their source? I didn't see an accident report linked. So I think the article or persons interviewed took some embellishment into the actual cause. |

Full accident report was linked from our article. See http://www.f-16.net/news_article1275.html |

Roger that. TPs are inert. Plus, given the fact that the building was completely empty (nighttime, IIRC), no one was ever in danger. Of course, EOD probably still did their dog and pony show, when they came to clear out the projectiles...bomb suits and such.
Sure thing man, for $500K, you can come punch one through my roof any day. I'm in Florida, I can go "Blue Roofed" as long as you want me to! |

Given the poor state of public education funding in this country, I predict a large number of schools will now be installing target banners on their roofs.
