At last those NVGs in the Raptor's cockpit have finally spotted something useful on the ground.
Naturally the F-35 EOTS would not have needed UAVs to discover the target coordinates. |

It sounds like the Raptor may have had more than just NVGs in its tool bag. You'd have to fly pretty low with NVGs, to positively identify some hikers. They may have made a fire, to help assist though, but it wasn't specified in the article. |

I think hcobb read it wrong. As far as I can tell, the Raptor spotted them initially, and once the drones got on station, they provided overwatch and coordinates to the Black Hawk crews.
And by the way- the Raptor IS designed for cheek AESA radar that could be used in ground-search, but our lovely military-political establishment made sure that hasn't happened yet. It's a born A2A fighter. I doubt an F-35 could take 3 F-16Cs, all with -9X/JHMCS in a knife fight. |

| Ah the 3v1 fight. My favorite. I do think its interesting that a $350M super interceptor was called in for SAR duties, and yes I am curious as to exactly how they were spotted. |

| Perhaps there are radar modes that we don't know about? Perhaps one hell of a high resolution SAR map mode? |

Well those of us that have served in the military know that when one of our assets is available to help, it will usually be pulled for duties such as this. As the article stated, it was already up and was simply diverted to assist. Also, the last time a Raptor was purchased, its cost was slightly over $140 million...we don't usually factor in R&D costs. That is a tactic only used by those who wish to terminate programs and is not normally done. Doesn't really matter how they were spotted, what matters is that they WERE spotted. Glad my Air Force boys/girls were able to help and everyone is safe! |

Hence why I said some magical ultra-high resolution and not your typical SAR mode. |

As with me, your a phantom fan. So you know how handy a gun can be. With only two missile on most mission I'm glad the "A" has a gun use on that 3rd F-16.

I understand, but that is not how things really go anymore. The B-2 bomber only cost 570M to manufacture (back in the day) but it is always hit with the 2.1 billion dollar price tag. The F-22, while as an aircraft only costs $150 million, has cost the taxpayers over $350 million per plane. Now as far as I am concerned, lets start making new Raptors for 150M now that all that pesky RnD is covered. |

Funny thing about SARing the Raptor. They had to come up with a magical new image compression format to get the pics to fit in the tiny amount of space on the Raptor's CPUs.
Yet another reason to yank those chips and put Baby Seal Inside. |
