"Top weapons acquisition officials in the Pentagon will meet next week to hold the first of two planned reviews on restructuring the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program and setting new procurement and budget plans."
".... the reviews will lead to a new cost estimate for the overall program, one which may be significantly higher than the existing $382 billion estimate for research, development and production of the 2,400-plus jets the U.S. military plans to buy."

| Well DUH. If the government reduces buy numbers by 120 (or likely, more) and/or flattens the production ramp (most likely 'and'), then cost increases are the self-fulfilling consequence of those actions. |

It's amazing to me the number of people who continue to be stupified by this simple concept. |

Uh, no.
If unit costs+R&D are such that they can only afford 2280 fighters under the current $382 estimate, then buying 120 more fighters would mean something closer to $390 billion. Buying more jets to water down the unit price doesn't magically lower to overall program cost... it just means you get a lower unit price.
If the JSF program were becoming more expensive because they were getting more orders, that would be a good sign. If the program's cost estimate rise while unit orders get reduced... that's not so good. |
