LBT rides again:

My response is:
The actual generation skip in American fighter aircraft happened in the 1990s.
It was called a half generation, because only one aircraft was
developed, the Super Hornet.
The USAF and USMC put aircraft purchases on hold to wait for fifth
generation aircraft. So skipping the F-35 would not be skipping one
generation of aircraft, but two.
And a lot of the problems with the F-35 have occurred because so many
new technologies are being put into one aircraft all at once. So it
does not look like generation skipping ever actually saves any money.

No. There wasn’t any generation skipped in the Nineties, unless you think that the F-15C/E that are flying today or a modern day F-16C (or even E) is equal to the ones that were flying 21 years ago over Iraq in the opening days of Desert Storm.
The difference is that instead of integrating the technologies in a brand new airframe they were integrated into the existing airframes since from an aerodynamic standpoint those airframes are not old at all even today. F-16s, F-15s, FA-18C/Ds are still scoring in the top notch. Their aerodynamic performances are not behind a Rafale, Typhoon, Su-3X, JAS-39 or F-2. They are just performing as well with their updated radars, avionics and systems.
I agree with you that if the USSR was still there, probably the technology would have run far more quickly since there was a race to win.
Hey, this is the peace dividend anyway! |

Is combat capability entirely based on generation??
Here's your answer: NO. Generations are an abstract concept developed for advertising and quick comparison. So I'd appreciate it if y'all would stop making absurd claims about 'generation skips' and such that have little to no concrete impact. |

Ahhh! At first When I read this forums title, I read "The F35 is already a generation ship" . At that point I said wow I did not know there was a 2 seater version already! |
