So that answers the question of what limits the F-35's speed, it's the thermal stability of the stealth coatings.

I'm somehow guessing that if they figured out how to make the coatings on the F-22 withstand its high supercruise speeds, that M1.6 shouldn't be an issue for the F-35(especially considering that they're supposed to be tougher, and easier to maintain).

I strongly suspect any heat damage was not due to 1.6 mach flight, but was due to extended use of the afterburner. Note that damage was confined to horizontal tails and engine thermal panels.
