The engine pods are kind of interesting. They don't tilt with the rotors, and don't seem to have the IR signature reducers. |

To tilt the engines or not to tilt has always been a close decision. On the V-22 they tilt in order to reduce weight, but it was a close call in the design phase. Earlier in the evolution of what became the V-280, the engines did in fact tilt. |

| Why isn't the V-22 good enough for the Army? |

It's bigger than what they need for this role. Army was originally onboard for the program back in the day, but pulled out for a variety of reasons including, but not limited to, USAF's objections to one of the main roles Army had planned for it. Further discussion would be more appropriate in other topic. |

Too big for utility, too small for heavy lift. Just right for the Marine Corps. |

Regarding heavy lift, interestingly the V-22 can lift a heavier payload than any helo in the West except the CH-47 and CH-53E. Of course, the Russian Mi-6, 10 and2 6 can lift more as well. It also holds the worlds speed record with an external load, demonstrating 10,000 lbs. at 220 knots. |
