So the cartoon and article were written by Michael Byers and Stewart Webb. Michael Byers holds the Canada Research Chair in Global Politics and International Law at the University of British Columbia. Stewart Webb is a Research Associate of the Salt Spring Forum.
I guess there is a reason why we don't let "politcal anyalists" make buying decisions regarding Canadian Armed Forces military hardware purchases as they would get to many Canadians Soldiers killed. Byers and Webb fail to recongize that in combat configuration the F-18E is in incapable of it's top speed and restricted to its combat radius of aproximately 722 km. Where as the F-35 in its combat configuration is capable of reaching its maximum design speed of mach 1.6 and has a combat radius of 1,090 km. For those you doing the math the F-35 has a 150% greater combat radius then the F-18E.
Also the F-35's ultimate ferry range is still unknow as it remains to be seen what kind external tanks and internal modifications will be available for the F-35 once it enters operational service. We can only surmise that the F-35's range and combat radius is only going to grow with future developments and enhancements. |
