I was not sure where to ask this and Ive searched the forum(fairly through) for answers, So I thought it belongs best here.
I consider the APG-68 as the benchmark for multimode radars which are now common in most aircraft.
However, is it.. or rather was it possible for any radar to become a multimode radar provided you changed its software or (for older radars) semi-digital processors?
I know that the APG-70 has it lineage from the 63.. but is it possible to simply take a run of the mill 63 and modify it "slightly" to incorporate similar features?
Or take the APG-66 and provide it with SAR capability?
I would envision it would take more than just replacing the signal processors on it .. but is it feasible or perhaps in some cases more cost effective then getting a new radar altogether?
As a far fetched idea..is it possible to take the Mig-25's jalopy RP-25 smerch and give it respectable ground and sea capable modes?

In theory, if one were willing to fund the incorporation of the proper backend/signal processors, then any fighter radar could be multi-mode. The question is whether or not it's a viable plan.
