"...The Lightning II incorporates a number of new systems and design features, including a flight control system that uses electrohydrostatic actuators. The jet also departs from legacy fighters in having a canopy hinged at the front, not the rear.
McFarlan says the original design study evaluated both an aft- and forward-hinged concept. The aft-hinged design, however, presented more integration challenges, especially with the lift-fan installation of the F-35B Stovl version. The forward-hinged concept was chosen because it "was lighter and provides significant maintainability advantages over the aft-hinged configuration," he says.
The pilot's ejection seat can be replaced without having to remove the canopy, and the forward-hinged design facilitates access to air vehicle and avionic display management computers. "We have already demonstrated ejection-seat removal and replacement on the F-35A, and the task was easily accomplished," McFarlan says....

I wonder if it would be possible to make the canopy not only pivot forward but also rotatable 180 degrees right or left to ease maintenance in the cockpit.

Is this with the E/F models? I know for a fact this is not necessary on the legacy hornets.
