| I was in a AIM-9X forum and we were discussing it's range. I haven't been able to find much on the range for FLIR. I just wanted to know if there was anything released on say the F-35's EODAS or others. It seems to me if Russia and China are going to have stealth fighters in the near future heat seekers may be the future. Wiki says the AIM-9X has a range of about 25 mi.'s. Can you track aircraft size targets at say 50mi.'s? I had just thought their aircraft just need to get stealthy enough to get inside IR range to fight ours. Just wanted an idea what this range could be at an "unclassified" level. Thanks. TSFG |

Raytheon publicly claims an ATFLIR ground target detection and designation range of over 40 nm. About the same for LockMart's Sniper as seen in one of their videos.

| I'd concur that future advances will be in multi-wave length IRST development with emphasis on Long wave, with respect to long range detection and triangulated passive targeting. In my hypothetical approach to a 4.5 gen F-16 dominating F-35 at Red Flag 2018, I have been a proponent of simply hiring LM to further develop the AAS-42 into an enhanced resolution, 'strategic' 280mm class IRST system. Employ that, coupled to a sufficiently extended-ranged IIR or dual-moded missile. |

| That's what I though. Thanks guys. I hope they can find a reliable way to use radar and IR seekers in the same missile. That would fix some of issues I see. If Amraam had both seekers it would be harder to evade and may have the abillity to lockon stealthy targets at a longer range if it couldn't see them with radar. I know this would be hard give the front of a missile is only so big and you maybe only able to have one seeker on the nose at one time. If you have to drop or eject the first seeker head you have to make sure in comes all the way off. Then hope the IR one works. I don't think AIM-9 will have the range we'll need in the future. |
