F16 is one of the legendary aircraft due to its agility and modularity which is yet to be countered by anyone yet and I wonder what will replace it the best

Well, if Obama had any b@lls he would approved the sale of 66 F-16's to Tawian. Seem like with how bad the economy is. He would have went out of his way to approve it.

Iraq is now buying Vipers and Indonesia is looking at second hand Block 25s. Pakistan can buy more, but how likely is that? Also, the UAE seems to have lost interest in the Rafail. Would they prefer some more F-16Es?

I think the UAE are playing the power negotiator to get the price down which puts Dassault in a difficult position because if they grant a big discount they may face price problems in India and Brazil so in the end the UAE will order the Rafale. France is the second most important strategic partner after the US and the UAE buys always from both.

There's a bill in the Senate sponsored by Texas Senator John Cornyn and Kay Granger to force Obama's hand in selling sixty-six F-16C/D's to Taiwan but I don't have too much hopes for it (see below).

Does anyone have an idea what the final count of F-16s that will be produced, approximately? I read in Janes Annual book about six (or more ) years ago that the count back then was 4,400 of F-16s built! That is not far behind the F-4 Phantom II which produced 5,195 built!!

Orders for more Vipers are discussed every day at LM. The database on this site shows 4520 built according to this search:
http://www.f-16.net/aircraft-database/v ... ctype/F-16

I doubt the 5,195 number will be reached, but I don't think anyone foresaw a run of 4,000 units back on 1974 either.

Back in 1997-99 I was the program manager for USAF production F-16s. The following is from memory so forgive any slight factual errors...

At that time the USAF had no plans for anymore and the FMS sales were drying up. Everyone knew that if the line went cold, no one would be willing to pony up startup costs to buy more. Thus, the Texas congressional delegation was able to get 6 additional jets in the 1996 appropriations bill, calling that "attrition reserve", i.e. replacements for those that had crashed. We got 6 more in 97 and 3 more in 98. I left after that and don't recall if we bought anymore, but it kept the line open long enough for some more interest. Bought Lockheed Martin another 17 or so years of production.

There was also one ordered in 1999 (00-0082), ten in 2000 (00-0218 to 0227and 4 in 2001 (01-7050 to 7053). The Polish Vipers gained serials in the 01-range, hence quite late ordered.

It was in that same timeframe that the UAE became the venture capitalist for LM with a 9 billion dollar program for Block 60s. That money kept a lot of software types employed as well as factory guys/gals.

Funny you should say that. In addition to my production duties, I also ran the Special Projects IPT. We were looking at some potential eye-watering upgrades to the Viper (eye-watering in terms of cost and capability) but politically could not pursue them without jeopardizing JSF (not to mention the budget was getting schwacked and we couldn't afford the upgrade. Then we sat back and watched the UAE deal develop.
