Im a sophmore in HS, and I want to know if not taking a foriegn language will hurt my chances of getting into AFROTC or ARMY ROTC. I have 1 year of Highschool french from my freshman year, but I dropped the course this year to take buissness classes. What should I stick with? : Foreign languge, tech/computer classes, or possibly try to cram in both for my junior year?
Thank you in advance. |

| I don't think that would hurt at all. They'll be looking more at your overall person that specific classes you took. This will hold true in college as well if you go for a pilot slot. Engineer, history, agriculture, it doesn't matter. Just try to excel at what you do! That being said, speaking a 2nd language is a good skill to have! |

Salute!
With respect for "disco", I would take the foreign language classes if you have a good track record there.
Many colleges like two or three years of high school foreign language courses.
No need to "specialize" in high school unless the college you have your eyes on have "requirements". USAFA doesn't, but don't know about the civilian institutions.
Do stuff you are good at and like, if at all possible. better to have a great GPA than a mediocre one.

| USAFA actually now requires techy majors to take two semesters of a language. It isn't an entrance requirement but for anyone looking to go that route, isn't bad to get a decent foundation ahead of time. |

| I would get the language classes out of the way in HS. In college it'll take up a disproportionate amount of time and you'll remember it better if you start when you're young. |

The reason I dropped the french classes was because it was dragging my overall average down. I thought it would better to focus on getting my GPA as high as possible, and then worry about the not-so-important stuff later on. It's a pretty common route to take at this day and age.
My problem with french is that I found it difficult to get decent grades on my classwork. I was okay at the oral element, where you actually USE the language, but the tedious accent marks, different forms of "Elle" ect. really messed up my grade to barley passing.
I feel I've matured academically from last year, so after what I read here it might be a good idea to try and pick it up again.
Thanks for the insight. |
