Quote:
UNITED NATIONS – Somalia's U.N. Mission says pirates hijacked a yacht carrying four U.S. citizens in the Indian Ocean off the Somali coast.
Omar Jamal, first secretary at the Somali mission, identified the yacht as the S/V Quest.
He said Friday that the mission is calling for the immediate release of the hostages and all other captives who are in the hands of the pirates.
Jamal said the hijacking raises "serious concern" as it follows the sentencing Thursday of a Somali pirate who kidnapped and brutalized the captain of a U.S.-flagged merchant ship off the coast of Africa in 2009. Abdiwali Abdiqadir Muse was sentenced to 33 years in prison.
Jamal said the mission again appeals to the international community to help curb the ever increasing acts of piracy.
We obviously have to get our people back, but why would someone want to take a yacht anywhere near Somalia?[/quote] |

| There have been reports that the pirates have been going further and further off shore (several hundred miles in some cases) to get the higher profile targets like merchant vessels, tankers, and such. The yacht prolly thought they were far enough away from the coast and outta danger. |

Or maybe the people on the yacht were idiots just like the kids who thought they could go hiking in norther Iraq. I hope we get our people back, and I hope plenty of Somali pirates are taken out in the process. |

| These pirates are joke. Why don't we just arm our ships with law rockets or grenades. i just do not understand why we are letting these backwoods idiots do this. |

Excuse me? That was an extremely ignorant post If Somali pirates are a joke, how did they manage to kick the UN forces including US troops out of the country in the mid nineties?
Arm ships? That is a joke. What country would let an armed ship dock in their ports?
Why do we let those idiots do this? - simple answer - because there is no way of telling pirates from fishermen. There is no way of fighting them. The CTF warships go chasing one boat and three others sneak out behing their backs. Shooting boats worth USD100 with weapons worth USD10,000 doesn't sound like a reasonable tactic either. Can't even arrest them. As soon as a warship closes in, they dump the weapons overboard, pull out their fishing rods and laugh at the marines' faces. Just because they're poor doesn't mean they're idiots. They're armed, desperate and deadly, but far from stupid. |
