TNI still Studying UU offer to donate F-16
Mon, December 06 2010 22:47
Kutai Timur, E Kalimantan (ANTARA News) - The National Defense Forces (TNI) is studying a US offer to provide it with F-16 fighter jets, TNI Commander Admiral Agus Suhartono said here on Monday.
Agus said the US offer to donate the planes needed to be followed up by a technical inspection of the aircraft and the conveyance of the findings to the decision-makers in the TNI.

give 1$ and receive 10$
you make grant of old crapy A/B models, with some 75% hours remaining, and you get a lot of work for jobless americans as these jets have to be first refurbished/upgraded befor they can fly.
the same thing happened with jordan 1996 |

| Poland recently received a few AMARC C-130E's. Maaaaanyyyyyy problems with them... no parts, trouble with maintenance. One of them is already grounded and canibalized due to a fuselage overstress (4.5g) in an "nearly crash" situation. That's why I think that getting old equipment from the US is not "a deal of the century" |

The US has a history of supplying surplus functional aircraft to allies and other countries in the interest of fostering good diplomatic, economic, and military relations. It usually falls to the recipient to inspect the stuff and get it airworthy. Often the cost to do this is offset by the foreign aid packages it gets from us. So the US taxpayer indirectly pays for it (I won't argue the pros or cons of that here).
Is it a "deal of the century"? From the US's standpoint, prolly not. But for some recipients it means retiring their outdated stuff and getting something more modern, even if it's several years, perhaps decades, behind what's current. |

By Agence France-Presse, Updated: 2/14/2011
