I found these figures pretty surprising.
http://www.aerospaceweb.org/question/pe ... 0152.shtml
A 747 is faster than an F-15 across the Atlantic! What do you think of these figures? Are they surprising? Of course, there are some military aircraft that are faster than the 747. The example given is the SR-71, which does it in less than 2 hours. The fastest commercial aircraft is obviously the Concorde, which did it in about 3 hours. What other aircraft do you think could complete the route faster than a 747? I would say the F-22, YF-23, XB-70, TU-144, Mirage IV, TSR.2, B-58. Others to add to the list? |

I think the whole A340 family. Every 340 300/600 I have been on they have always pushed it at cruise. 777 should be up there too. MD-11 cargos for Fed-Ex depending on a lot of things will push it to .83, Dreamliner should be up with the 747, 777. Been on some A330-200's but I didn't know how fast they were going (usually displayed as effective ground speed) on the entertainment display.
As you may know airlines are really going nuts to save fuel so the cost index set for a particular flight based on company procedures will depend how fast of a cruise speed they are allowed to go. Most of these pigs step climb on long flights so the earlier part of the flight might not have as fast as an effective ground speed as the later part of the flight (of course also depending on conditions/winds aloft ). |

Love that jet. Took the nickel tour when I worked in Atlanta. We hangered it. Very quiet on take off. Barely hear it.
I believe Cessna's one liner for ads was"Everything faster was designed with government funding." |

| According to my Microsoft Flight Simulator, Mmo of a 747 is .88. Mmo on a 777 is around .85, and a 737 is .82 . I have "seen" groundspeeds in the 747 in excess of 520 kts on this sim. Of course, I can't find anybody (John Travolta, are you listening?) to let me fly their 747 to see if the sim is correct... |

| The Concorde's cruise speed is listed as 1350 mph. But, I just did some calculations and found this. So, the fastest it flew from New York-London was 2 hours and 53 minutes. If you divide 3463 miles, the distance between the two cities, by the flight time, you get a speed of about 1202 mph. Don't get me wrong, that's still of course very fast, but still not the 1350 mph listed cruise speed. |

This website allows you to find the ]distance between cities or any two places using Google maps.
The calculated distance will be shown in miles and [Link pending approval] this tool is simple; you can enter two cities or location names and press the measure distance button, and also drag the markers to desired locations. Every time you move the markers the
distance between them will be calculated automatically in miles and kilometers. |

It's not flying at 1350 from take off to landing though. There are subsonic portions of the flight, during take off/landing, etc.... |

I'd be curious what flight time an unrefueled F-16XL equipped with GE-132 (or next-gen advanced core F110 motors), a speed-friendly F-16XL specific CFT and a couple 600gal tanks could have made a trans-Atlantic trip in |
