That's the least number...we have requested for a dozen Vipers to equip a squadron of our Air Defense Wing...
I just hope that the US Government will see through the Philippine Air Force's deficiencies and help it to be a better in performing its primary duty.

There is enough money in the budget to purchase support the purchase of 1 new F-16.

OR, we could supply them as foreign aid. Having hostile aircraft constantly penetrating an ally's airspace is generally considered to be a bad situation. Just saying.

“Well, we confirm that we were asking for F-15 jets and also—F-16, sorry. But again, that is subject to a decision on the part of US whether to accede to our request. We’ve asked for two ships already, the Hamilton cutter. We’ve asked and it’s up to the US government whether to accede to our request for the US fighter jets,” he added."

F-15s? F-16s, as well? How can they afford this stuff? I'm all for letting the Philippines have them as long as they come up with the money to pay for them. The US is ill equipped to deal with charity right now. We're broke.

disco, the F15 comment appears to have been a misspoken slip and was corrected in the quote. But have no fear, there's plenty of money in DoD budget to transfer a couple of F16 jets + support and training to a friend and ally in need as either 'one-offs' or as attrition, etc. If the USAF can afford 1,700 F-35A, plus tankers, plus NGB et al, then it's not an issue. It's simply about priorities. Easily done.

My personal reflection on this issue however would be on the symbolism of any such eventual transfer and not so much the operational worthiness. I could be wrong but there would probably be a period of time required for pilot training for one thing in order to achieve an IOC (unless pilot(s) on exchange are already being trained on a high performance fighter of this type. No question though, the Philippine Armed Forces while very dedicated, proud and equipped mostly for special counter-insurgency operations (unfortunate, but the reality still today for the country) are otherwise out-matched in every modern sphere of military-technical equipment. And incidentally I happened to be in the Philippines during this time-frame and was of course following the local news reporting on these subjects.

Where I'd probably support even more attention by the USG however, would be in helping to yes, LEAD efforts of those involved and incentivize regional negotiations and perhaps even arbitration at the UN to collectively resolve the various conflicts straight up. Leadership in this realm would imho convert to more positive influence and stability than any 2 F-16s could provide. Something not to underestimate. Additionally, with respect to foreign aid is concerned in general vis-a-vis Philippines... assist instead in financing and joint development of renewable energy projects in the Islands to generate more strategic benefit all around than even F-16s! Salute

Respects to the Philippines for progress, revival and security..

Ever gotten a 'free' cell-phone from a carrier? Think they're actually giving them away at a loss? No; they're recouping the cost of the phone plus making profits from the services that go with the phone - enter the contract.

Now apply the same theory to multi-million $$ fighter jets.

Shall we allow said aircraft at AMARC simply corrode away until some pays $0.36/lb in scrap to make them into ball bats, fancy rims or beer cans?

I say let them have the aircraft provided there is a contract in place (which there typically is) for support, training, spares, logistics, and use of THEIR bases in defense of US and/or Philippine security interests, etc.

Those aircraft are worth more (to us as American tax-payers) out flying over the Philippines than wasting away in a bone yard.

Two Cents TEG

Point taken. I hope that's the approach the USG/DOD will take. The article seemed to indicate, to me, that the PhAF wanted a hand-out. However, if the Philippines can't afford it, they can't afford it. They could sign the contract and then say later that they just ran out of money. I would like to see older F-16s get a new lease of life.

Does anyone know what the offer stands at? F-16As? F-16Cs? Total numbers?
