Generally Jet aircraft have landed on aircraft carriers using the same technique since the beginning of the jet age - details may vary with any individual aircraft of course.
"2GB PDF (extracted from the main 4.4GB PDF) about ‘How to Deck Land’ with reference not only to the A4G Skyhawk but to other USN and RN aircraft of that era. In the mid-1960s groups of new RAN FAA pilots were trained in the USofA, instead of with the RAAF in Australia (basic flight training to Wings standard). This meant that these USN trained pilots became carrier qualified in the T-28C Trojan, so this aircraft is included also. More info about FCLP and ‘carrier deck’ at OLF/NOLF airfields is included as well as extra videos showing from the pilot perspective how to deck land & FCLP the T-45C Goshawk. Please see the main 4.4GB PDF for supporting information.
Please use a download manager or 'right mouse click' on the download URL below to "Save target as" to your computer. As indicated further down the page all these PDFs must be viewed on 'Windows XP SP2 or above computers' [Windows 7 is best] using the latest Adobe Reader 9.4.1 or better (when available). MAC users will have varying results with these PDFs I'm told (but I don't have a MAC because they are ...)."

"No big deal. This pilot made the same mistake I watched and waved hundreds of times by F-14 TOMCAT, F/A-18 and others make. Russia is feeling and paying the price of carrier aviation now that they have one. GRADE/Pilot Debrief: ‘High comedown in the middle to in close, pull nose up on not enough power at the ramp = CUT PASS you idiot’. Prohibited from flying at night until he/she shows 10 solid passes at night & cranial lobe is removed from rectum. No charge, Paddles."
We don't know if the pilot did his own late waveoff or he was ordered to do so by LSO or other. However the hook comes close to catching a wire for an inflight arrest that would have been catastrophic for the aircraft and pilot and perhaps the ship.
Waveoffs are performed by maintaining the Optimum Angle of Attack - going to max power (burner if you got it) - reducing any drag by bringing in the speedbrakes but keeping wheels and flaps down until safe height reached. Pulling up the nose beyond the Opt AoA lowers the hook as we can see - increasing the likelihood of an inflight arrest WITH A NOSE HIGH ATTITUDE!
If the aircraft does inflight arrest - at least when at Opt AoA - it may have a chance to survive the deck landing subsequently. This scenario has been played out by older USN aircraft over the years. Hence NATOPS will specify clearly how to WAVE the Fcuk OFF!
__________
Perhaps less relevant today - especially for the F-35C - is that over rotation during a waveoff may put the aircraft on the other side of the power curve - meaning it will not accelerate nor climb in the over rotated condition. If it descends then - good night. |
