Anyone knows if the Viper is qualified in any country to use the AGM 84 Harpoon anti-ship missile?

If this is wrong, is the Penguin the only anti-ship missile for the Viper?

Hi Lucky,

The Viper is qualified to use the AGM-84 Harpoon missile. In the recently announced Omani order Harpoons are included in the deal.

Both the AGM-84 Harpoon and the AGM-119 Penguin Missiles are dedicated anti-ship missiles. But in a sense other missiles can be used in that role too.

It is known that the AGM-65 Maverick once was tested on the F-16 in the anti-ship role. The only disadvantage of the missile is that is hasn't got a sufficient warhead to make any major destruction to a large naval vessel. But in a way it could be used for it. Also standoff missiles could be used in a anti-ship role. For example the AGM-142 Popeye or the AS-30L could be used as high range anti-ship missiles. As far as I know test in that sense have never been undertaken. I don't know if the future AGM-154 or AGM-158 standoff missiles would be used against naval vessels, but I'm sure they could be adapted to be used as anti-ship missiles.

In the near future we are trying to update the armaments section on this website and vastly expand the number of weapons who are reviewed. In that way this kind of information would be available.

Harpoon Missiles are quite effective

Guest: They use AGM-84 not only becauses it has a big warhead, but also for their sea skimming altitute. If my memory is correct, the sea skimming altitute is about 3ft...... it's pretty tough to defend ships from that kind of missiles!

Hey guys,

to my best knowledge, the RoCAF Viper is the only operator ever test fired the Harpoon? By any chance, anyone has a link to picture of the Viper armed with Harpoon?

If you have not seen this RNoAF Viper armed with Penguin before, enjoy! I think it looks extremely cool. Very Happy

I am certain RoKAF (South Korea) Blk 52 is set up for Harpoon.

if not mistaken, egypt & singapore also seemed to have their f-16s equipped with harpoons

Egypt has indeed modified its F-16C/Ds to carry the Harpoon and GBU-15.

I'm not sure about Singapore though. I think they have the Harpoon missile, but I seem to remember they only have the SSM version which they fire from missile boats. Could be wrong though !

I found the following information in the <a href="http://www.f-16.net/index.php?module=daily_archive&type=user">F-16.net News Archive</A>: Taiwan, Oman, and Egypt have (or will have in the case of Oman) the Harpoon in their inventory for use on their F-16s.

As far as I could find, Singapore only uses the Harpoon as an SSM and not as AGM, so they don't use it on their F-16s.
