No. Once again, the proposed F-15 Golden Eagle IRST pod mount is apparently designed for the CENTERLINE Sta 5. There is NO point on the C/D, per the K/SG IRST config (see photo above). And the Japanese FLIR/IRST(?) as depicted above is not the AAS-42 derived IRST.

And lastly, regarding Navy cutting the Super Hornet's IRST tank.. I dont believe that's accurate.

Couple of things. I'm aware that there's no station on the C/D as in my illustration (that's an F-15I, BTW). I used that picture because it was the best illustration I could find of an IRST inside a pylon.

The F-15J does not use the AN/AAS-42, it was just a convenient illustration to show an IRST mounted in front of the cockpit.

Which lense is bigger and picture more granular?

Lens size does not matter, it the technology behind it.

I beg to differ. Lens size is important on anything optical.

What I meant was that newer, high pixel-count sensors will beat out a large lens backed by older tech.

aaam, I beg to differ but that appears indeed to be a brand new F-15K jet with a Lantirn pod(?) and not and older F-15I? I know this is nitpicking, but this is an aviation forum so what else can one say! Very Happy

And as noted, the Golden Eagle's 'IRST' pod is reportedly to be mounted on the Centerline station, while an F-15E+ can mount both a next gen SoJ on the centerline and IRST under the fuselage point - enabling enhanced tactical capability.

Lastly, I'll concur with both madrat and Spud... that 'aperture size' has a relation to the performance of a LW IRST performance (e.g., the 9.2" AAS-42 derived LW IRST aperture) as does w/ the upgraded enhancements to such optical resolution, via new derivatives of AAS-42 and Litening/Sniper 'Sensor Enhanced' mods. It would be interesting to see what Northrop could do competitively with LM in that department, say with a strategic 280mm LW IRST aperture coupled w/ their latest resolution advances.

Nits are there to be picked, so have at it! The identification on the original picture I stole (I mean "researched") identified it as an Israeli F-15, which is why I called it an F-15I.

However, further theft ("more research") here, indicates it's probably an F-15SG:

Thanks for that classic F-15SG show-case vid link!

I guess I was looking at a couple of things in my personal gut-assessment: color scheme first of all seems to be more of the F-15K (google F-15K images http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&q=f-15k&wrapid=tlif129593737857810&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=univ&ei=pm8-TfH6BsGs8AaXh5nmCg&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=4&ved=0CEIQsAQwAw&biw=1003&bih=563 compared to F-15SG images), rather than the distinctive scheme applied on the F-15SG? Also, there appears to pics of the exact inlet covers on the F-15K pics. Interestingly, it appears that there is the exact pic in the google F-15K images attributed to go figure, F-16.net!! Yet, when clicking on the actual image it seems to have been taken down?

Lastly, I was thinking F-15K since it apparently employs the Tiger-eyes IRST combo w/Lantirn pod as seen here also:

... while F-15SG reportedly operates The Tiger-eyes IRST combo, although w/Sniper ATP? Shrug

While trying to stay relevant to the topic i must ask this. Will the AESA equipped C/D eagles receive a glass cockpit layout like the E model eagle and the F-22 or will it keep the analog gauges?
