What exactly are the Golden Eagles going to be doing are they going to take long range amraam shots as the F-22's give them coordinates and move into to kill or what?

They'll look good on paper, and wait for a foreign (non-US) country to purchase them versus 'base' F-15 designs.

I don't see the USAF buying any with the F-35 in production.

Two Cents I'd find an advanced 'cheap' F-16 purchase more likely at about 0.1%

You sure you're not thinking of the Silent Eagle? I thought the USAF already had some Golden Eagles.

Yeah, I think TEG was thinking SE, not the GE?? no prob. Anyhow.. mustang, to answer your question, cough, the the GE would be doing what the standard C/D has been doing thus far - vis-a-vis deterrence and keeping peace - albeit in a severely numerically reduced but modernized/upgraded fashion to keep relevant. Cheers- Thumb

Actually, according to the USAF, it'll be the other way around. The F-22s will remain EMCON, while the non-stealthy Eagles provide targeting, stand off jamming/EA support. This way the Raptors can maximize their stealthiness, and element of surprise.

Yep sorry... Embarassed Was thinking Silent Eagles...

Golden Eagle is still a silly title, they're simply C/D Eagles with new radars.

They didn't change the name of the Vipers by adding special modifiers every time a new gadget was installed.

I can see it they were modifying the basic airframe with new cockpits, radars, PW-229 engines, and such...

Why not simply AESA Eagles? Shrug

Isn't it time we give these Golden Eagles more than just an AESA radar?

Isn't there more to it? I thought they get new helmets, communication gear to interact with the F-22, and rwr's.

Your confusion is understandable, TEG, you were dealing with the end of the airmachine that is less familiar to you! Smile
(Totally enjoy hearing your knowledge about the trailing end, though.)

They're getting more than just AESA radars though. They're getting new comms/datalinks, new EW systems, IRST, upgraded cockpits, along with having JHMCS, -9X, -120D, etc...

I'm not trying to challenge your credibility, but do you have any sources? I'd like to read more about these upgrades. Don't some F-15s already have the AESA radars, JHMCS and AIM-9X in use operationally? I saw a picture of an advanced JSF-like cockpit ugprade for the Super Hornet, I wonder if that's adaptable to the F-15.

Yes F-15Cs already have JHMCS, AIM-9X and an increasing number is fitted with the AN/APG-63(V3).
Some budgeting documents indicated funds for new radios, mode 5 IFF and planned cockpit upgrades. 100 IRST pods has been ordered by the USAF last year or so and are scheduled for delivery in 2013.
Haven't heared about new datalinks and EW gear however.

Here's a few links I was able to find pretty quickly. I'll see what else I can find.

Thanks for the links WW. Though I thought about new RWR and internal jammer replacing the current kit AN/ALR-56C & AN/ALQ-135 rather than jamming functions of the radar or external jamming pods.
