It's kind of hard to find reviews, so what is the best kind of home built, full size airplane kit (brand,model,etc)?

I would go with one of the RV series airplanes (www.vansaircraft.com). There's a very large support network of builders and the airplanes are great performers. My dad and I built an RV-6 many years ago.
