Personally I believe the max speed for the JSF should have been specified at something higher than M1.6. Such a speed would be understandable for a pure STOVL aircraft, but seems to be cutting corners with something as important as the JSF. I think M1.8-1.9 should have been the target. Don't you start needing things like variable intake ramps above M2.0 anyway? If the F-35 can reach M1.8+ that is good news even if weapons bay operations are limited to M1.6 or so.
Currently this and weight related concerns are my biggest concerns over the design. If the current 29,000-34,000 empty weight estimates are correctly that is very heavy. |

| If the B/C models can reach M1.6+, then the A model with less drag/weight, should easily exceed this speed. Additionally, M1.6 is an operational combat speed design(with 5500lbs of weapons) for the F-35, not a theoretical top speed like the F-15's M2.5(clean). |

| Maybe the fact that the intakes provide about 8% more air than the specs will help a bit too at maximum speed and altitude.. |
